The more uncomfortable you are, the better

ORIGINALITY AND CREATION

The path and practice of self-discovery through writing

By Daigo

When you create, you push the boundaries of what is known to the world and what is unknown.

Sometimes, I find myself in a difficult situation.

Where you don’t have a reference for what you are doing and Learnings from what has been done before.

If you find yourself in such a situation, be informed that you are in a good place.

It is filled with fear, it has a resistance of stepping into the unknown and hesitance of uncertainty.

Right now it might make you uncomfortable.

But at the other end of the spectrum, there is joy and understanding to create with a sense of freedom.

Freedom from the styles of the past, freedom from the isms and freedom of creating with your own language and your own grammar.

Once you have found your originality, you become free to create without any resistance.

You create effortlessly. Write without grasping for words and draw without bothering about the forms and medium.

At first, this state comes with training.

But as you grow in your practice it becomes second nature.

The intention here might be to find the originality. But the process will also help you find yourself.

Your voice and your true nature.

Self.

Not what?, but how?

It is crucial to understand that you or I don’t have anything new to say.

Neither van Gogh nor Gauguin had anything original to paint.

All the messiahs and saints had nothing original to convey.

They pointed towards the same truth, the way they did it was different.

They have painted the same sunrise in their unique way.

Some took the path of Science like Einstein, and Some chose the path of writing poems like Rumi.

There is nothing outside of life they spoke. And there is nothing to speak about nothing.

Spiritually, writing is not about what it is, but what it is not.

A sculpture is the remanence of the mass that has been chiselled out of a stone.

See what you can take and what you are willing to let go.

Try everything before discarding, as you make an informed decision on what makes sense to you.

You automatically shred the things that are not aligned to your nature and what is yours stays with you.

Niche is overrated

Spiritually you will feel one with everything.

When I sat down to think about a central theme to the writings, honestly, I found none.

I have an interest in Fashion, Nature, Travel, Reading and Spirituality.

I write about all of them. But there is an orientation to this writing.

Once you start writing and do it for a while you will find a core inclination in your writing.

Yes, you will have your own style of course, but everything will be brushed with an inclination towards one major aspect.

For me it is spirituality. For many of the artists and writers, I know it differs for everybody.

Many find a need to speak from a socio-political point of view and these writers would write about fashion from the same perspective.

I also have friends who look at Human Development from a spiritual perspective. They work with the UN and are doing well.

The point is, the “NICHE” as it is hyped is not important or mandatory.

Keep writing and let it evolve and have its style.

An audience would come to an understanding of your nature.

Then whatever you write is yours; the subject does not matter.

Allow the flow

When an idea pops up in your mind, don’t suppress it by saying “Neh, that does not fit my agenda of execution”

Trust me, I have too long to reconcile with the multifaceted nature of my areas of interest.

At first, you will feel that having so many interests is a shallow and scattered effort.

But once you sit down to write, and allow the topic, the writing to pour out, you will be at peace with ourself and with the process of writing.

Good writing comes when you allow yourself to flow in the currents of the stream of consciousness.

Not when you resist it just to fit in the frames of your limitation.

If you can limit yourself, you can tap into unlimited potential too.

You decide how you want you treat yourself.

End note

Authenticity does not come from assimilating to the conventional wisdom. It seems it comes by following the authoritarian voices in the space.

Authenticity comes when you write on a known subject in your voice. The audience is going to follow you, not your content.

The content can be anything, you are what makes it unique.

Experience, a lot.

Experience how you feel when you are writing while on the quest to find your voice.

Experience the experiences in life, so that you might stumble upon what resonates with you.

Keep creating, because that’s the only way to find out.
