Insights and tips from Redditor with 1,000,000+ Karma

More than a year ago, I decided to hop on a platform which is feared by most marketers.

People get banned, and users show outrage.

In the midst of all of this, there is a communal aspect to Reddit that brings people together.

They agree and they disagree.

There is honesty in the participation.

If you really want to test your content, take it to Reddit.

But before that, be mindful of the following reddiquettes.

I was banned from the site when I attempted to use it first.

Damn, I took it as a challenge to stand strong on the platform within a year.

I read every article possible about Reddit, listened to many podcasts and came up with a plan to conquer the site. (I know I am being dramatic)

A year later have more than 1,000,000 Karma as I am writing this article.

Let\’s take a look at the points that allowed me to survive on the platform and successfully use it for many of my projects.

Here are some points I have gathered from Reddit and discussion outside:

  1. If upvotes on the post are equal to the time of post, it is likely to go viral (3 upvotes posted 3 minutes ago)
  2. The first 10 votes are equivalent to 100 votes, And the first 100 to 1000 (This is how Reddit determine the importance of the post.)
  3. Most of the main communities have Karma requirements to post. It varies from community to community. This is to ensure participation in community health and helps keep spammers off the Bay.
  4. Mentioning someone personally and identifying the individual is taboo on Reddit (user blah blah is my schoolmate / Pop star etc.) — Doxing.
  5. Do not try to manipulate the system of Reddit; by upvoting from another account, asking people to upvote your content etc.
  6. Redditors Generally don’t like emojis in comments. Use : ) instead.
  7. 100,000 Karmas get you into the cream community, which is private and guarded with secrecy.
  8. You can self-promote if you follow a 9:1 ratio. (9 posts to contribute, one post to self-promote)
  9. Your comment Karma bares more weightage as community participation.
  10. Every subreddit has its own Culture, make yourself acquainted with the community before posting.
  11. Redditors who follow your profile see the posts published on your profile, not your general activity on the site. (What you post in other communities.)
  12. OP means — Original Poster. You will see this in your comments.

There are some clubs on Reddit that have minimum Karma requirements

Quadrant Club: If any of your posts have more than 25k upvotes
Eternity Club: If your post has been on the front page (what happens here, stays here)
Lounge: If you have bought Reddit premium

I love to curate, and this was a small attempt at Reddit. Please add to the comment if I am missing anything.

I thought it would be a good extension to the Guerilla marketing post.
