Do all enlightened people become a master?
I was tossed into the spiritual realm when my world turned upside down and disappeared in 2017.
Since then, I have taken on an inner and physical journey.
I was on a quest to know what had changed, and if has anything left at all.
The spiritual enlightenment had even washed away the “concept” of enlightenment.
No dimension, no way, no aim and nothing to look forward to.
What is left after enlightenment?
I spoke to many people on my one-year-long journey on my bike.
Visited many temples, ashrams and sacred places.
I intend to do it again in the near future but for different reasons.
While I was looking for an answer to the question — What is the purpose of life if a person is detached from the life itself?
It felt like a blissful depression.
They share their wisdom in any form available. It does not have to be a formal set-up of Master and Disciple.
They glorify and insult people only to make space for knowledge to sprout new beginnings.
A beginning that moves silently towards dissolving the ego and mind.
While many enlightened beings might directly or indirectly initiate people into spirituality and self-awareness — they don’t necessarily become a Master.
People might call them masters but they might not fit the image of a person wearing fancy dress and sitting on a throne.
Moreover, many of the masters whom I read and know did have a job, like a real job and were not completely dependent on the income from disciples.
In fact, they did not charge anything for discourses and guidance.
I want this post to be a record and note about such masters.
Who lived to have an identity of the spiritual master but worked in a mundane workspace to earn bread for themselves and their family (if any).
My master worked as an art professor in Australia, his master’s master was an employee in Japan (he used to teach zen after work), and I work as a marketing professional.
.Here is the list of spiritual teachers who had a day job:
- Papaji — Worked as a canteen store manager in Madras (Chennai)
- Kabir — weaved clothes
- Eintstien — Scientist
- Tukaram — Farming, shop and sawkari
- Nisargdatta Maharaj — Shop vendor
- Bashō — waterworks department (although he was a rising star as establisher of Danrin style school.)
I will add more names to the list as I find more information on the enlightened beings who did a normal job.
The goal of curating this list is to acknowledge that spiritual enlightenment is not about wearing fancy exotic drapery and sitting in front of people giving discourses.
Rather, it is all about doing what you already do, being more alert and aware.
