How to find your own voice in your writing?

INTERNET HAS INFLUENCED YOUR WRITING

Overcome the challenges of online business.

Writers aspire to be known for their writing.

You will recognise Khalil Gibran by reading just one line.

But in the age of the internet, even Gibran would have lost his tone, the voice of his words.

Today\’s argument is all about —

How you can reach more people?

What style is in trend?

Will it fit the format?

Will algorithms like it?

Humans, especially writers have lost voices in the waves of content.

However, these waves of content are the very reason that we need to find our voice back.

To stand out, to be unique and to be you.

Because no one else can be you.

We will go point-wise on things that tend to influence the online writing process and come up with a viable solution for each of them.

Saturation

There is an overload of information on the internet.

Each post we write every day adds to the information.

But does it really add anything new?

I guess, people are not that interested in the information, but more interested in where the information is coming from.

If a friend tells you that a black tiger was found roaming around the woods in the area, you might find it interesting, think about your own safety or just disregard it being a rumour.

But if you read the same information in a newspaper with an amazing headline “Rare to find, first of its kind — Black Tiger was spotted in the woods of Tomstown, scientists and biologists are taken by Awe”

Suddenly you will believe that there is a black tiger in the woods of your neighbourhood, and you might feel proud and happy that your town is in the news.

Here Marshall McLuhan makes an interesting point — “Medium is the message.”

The medium we chose to write on, to deliver the message says a lot about how things are written.

Coincidently I choose to write on medium : )

When the Gutenberg press was invented, suddenly news was in the hands of common people.

It was no longer an oral tradition and gossip, but rather formalised words. Inked.

The point is — to choose a medium that is aligned with your nature and deliver your voice using that medium.

I have tried, Quora, WordPress, and Custom HTML sites before settling with Medium.com

It adds to the discoverability of your voice too.

Personal Branding

I don\’t like the term, it is the productising of humans.

Humans don’t live on shelves and are not for sale.

The only economics of human life is that they trade time for money, in many ways.

Company is the term that was invented to hide behind names and laws; and be less accountable and questionable.

If something goes south, the company did it, not a person.

Said so, the brand is the offspring of the company, hence I sometimes have a hard time conceiving the idea of a “personal brand”.

Brand demands consistency in the message, product and what people are going to expect.

Humans by nature are unpredictable.

I do many things and have many likings — spirituality, writing, reading, cinema, gardening and so on..

I don’t wake up like a machine and start writing generative text.

A lot of thoughts go behind it, which are not constrained by an idea called a brand.

Forget about running after an ideological idea about yourself in your own mind.

They are nothing more than distraction and bondage.

Be in the present, do what you do and the personal brand will form on it’s own.

If that is the agenda.

Resilience

Doing anything new is often faced by the challenge of criticism.

A seasoned writer is resilient towards it.

Knows what he writes and why he writes.

He writes for the person who reads his work and appreciates it.

Originality

In the midst of balancing your steps on so many stones, how would you approach the endeavour of writing?

How will you fulfil your urge to write something you are proud of?

Something you will go back and read again to edit and re-edit.

There are two ways in which you can reach originality.

One, by accepting everything that comes your way.

Two, by rejecting anything that comes your way.

In both ways, whatever is true to you will stay with you.

In both ways, You will have to keep doing what you are doing, either in acceptance or denial.

And a day will rise when you will have found your voice.

Best of luck!
