We all do it — try this technique to overcome Writer’s Block

DO YOU SPEND HOURS STARING AT A BLANK SCREEN?

Write 1000 words every day without procrastinating.

We all face the demon of procrastination, and I can empathise with people who go through it.

Every problem we face, and every challenge we come across is ideological in nature at the beginning.

Will people judge me?

I write with a pen name, will I ever sound authentic?

Am I a good writer?

Do I really know how to do business?

does the world of a successful online empire really exist?

So on and so forth. Go ahead and add to the list.

It will become an endless list of stories about why you don’t want to do something — anything.

You keep endlessly scrolling the social media feed or just stare at the blank screen.

Or else, label it as “writer’s block”.

I want to shock you with this revelation. One that came up in a conversation with a psychotherapist.

Yes, it comes from a woman who has practised psychotherapy for more than three decades.

Writer’s block as a term is a recent invention.

I doubt if Shakespeare ever had writer’s block, or he at least called it that.

Said so, it has also been found that writers hide behind the term to procrastinate too.

Is there any way out?

What are the ways to overcome this situation? Where you knowingly and unknowingly delay the task in your hands.

I was fortunate to get these two techniques, which allowed me to overcome the so-called Writer’s Block.

I decide, sit, write and publish. That simple!

List

When you are met with writer’s block and feel like procrastinating, write it down on a paper or slate.

Write down anything that comes to your mind.

I am feeling exhausted.

I fear being honest with the audience.

I don’t have anything to write about.

And so on..

You may also write down potential topics that you might want to write about today.

But when you do so, use a timer!

Timer

Use a timer to write a list of the reasons why you are feeling not to write or to find out the topics on which you would like to write today.

I would set a timer for 5 minutes for this exercise.

You will be stunned to know that you come across 15–20 points/topics in this time frame.

Moreover, the timer compels the brain to flush out the thoughts that are choked due to resistance.

This is a good exercise for understanding the inner resistance.

While making the list many thoughts flash through your mind making you aware of your own insecurities and fears.

The only catch is that do this exercise from a very non-judgemental space.

Let the thoughts flow.

Relax!

No one is going to read it. It is for you and you only.

Okay, you have overcome the procrastination and selected a lovely topic to write about today.

Don’t you want to write it now? That too without spending a whole day?

The same trick works here too.

I put a timer of 1 hour to write and 30 minutes to edit.

It works wonders.

The first draft is very spontaneous and free-flowing, in the last half an hour I tie up the loose ends, or sometimes leave them intentionally.

The point is this exercise has helped me write 700–1000 words every day.

These exercises help transform ideological concepts into realistic goals.

You become more grounded.

Honesty

Additionally, I feel like adding a note about honesty in writing.

When I write, I don’t decide that I am going to write next Othello.

Times have changed, and writing styles on the internet have changed.

Enter button has never been used so much in the history of writing.

Modern humans like things presented with simplicity and honesty.

Pretentiousness is time expensive. You constantly have to invent ways to lie and keep covering them up.

I am a marketer who is currently figuring out how I can reach people and make them interested in doing business with me. — There is nothing wrong in being honest

Be open and honest about putting out your thoughts in front of the world.

The people who are going to judge you are going to judge you anyway.

But people who love you will love you more being simple and honest.

May I take this opportunity to say — I love you : )
