SUPER SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE FOLLOW THESE
Things I picked from a friendly acquaintance with super-successful
There are very few people successful people whom you are likely to meet.
To discuss ideas and processes which can be valuable for your endeavour as a marketer or a business person.
Even if you meet a successful guy chances are bright that you will be short on time to even speak casually.
Successful people are busy people.
They might have a huge empire running on automation, but they would prefer the rest of the time devoted to acquiring knowledge and opulence.
I would like to state a real-life example.
I was in the company of a successful businessman who had built an empire in the energy sector in India.
It was a very casual meet-up with friends and I didn’t really know who he was.
We spoke about the weather and the sunset on the beach overlooking his house in Mumbai.
We spoke about everything, but business and money in our friendly acquaintance.
It was after 4 years that I came across his book from another friend.
I was unaware of his business, success and writings.
There was so much to unpack with this new discovery.
It hit me hard to understand that he was not only an entrepreneur, successful in his field but also a mentor who writes about his knowledge in newspaper columns and books.
I laughed at this situation, because of the irony of not “really” knowing a person I know.
This also made me pause and reconcile the fact that information is to be shared.
The real value of information is in sharing.
It is the eccentric nature of information to be spread.
Knowledge that is not shared is wasted.
And the sharing has to be initiated, to exhilarate the spread and learning experience.
Secondly, Sharing my experience would help me materialise my thoughts about the books and learning. Hence I write.
Here are things 99% of people need to understand to be in the top 1%:
Consistency is the key:
You can’t win the war, by fighting only one battle.
To be successful in any area of business, you have to be consistent.
Especially, when you are doing things that have never done before; it needs a lot of groundwork to inform people about your product.
Repetition is reputation.
Repeat your message so often that it becomes hard for people to forget it.
This is real training.
To do so, you will have to set a routine, and a system to deliver your message on a daily basis.
This also means dedicating time for yourself to exercise and eating healthily.
Set Clear Goals:
You don’t slide in a letter in the post box without writing an address on it.
Similarly, you don’t go anywhere if you don’t know where you are going.
This is more complex than you think. It’s not that you write your goals on paper and walk towards achieving them.
You need to have clarity about yourself and what you want to achieve.
This awareness of goals should come from within rather than from borrowed aspirations
Keep Learning:
Inform yourself about something new today.
Or revisit the books that have helped in any anyways to find a new perspective.
Meet people who add value to your life goal.
And seek mentorship from people who are smarter than you.
Manage your time:
If you are working in a creative industry, especially if you are a writer or painter, you heavily rely on inspiration to strike.
I have read many blogs, books and sessions where creative people are advised to set time for their work.
I am yet to come to terms with this advice. It does not work.
Painter render a painting, and they articulate their thoughts. The same is true with the writers and creative entrepreneurs.
Does that mean that creative people cannot manage their time?
They can absolutely do so by only listing out the things that they need to get done on a daily basis.
You may be flexible with the “when” you want to do it, but can have clarity about what you want to get done in a day.
Network:
“The network is your net worth”
You are well familiar with this phrase.
It’s time to execute and see if it is really true.
In my own personal experience, it is one of the greatest assets that I have built in the past 20 years.
I am invited to many events and closed groups to join in regularly.
This not only sparks new ideas to work on but also gives an opportunity to learn things about market trends and people in general.
Resilience:
A man I know, one day was crying a river because he was in debt and didn’t have money to eat that day.
This is the same man which I mentioned earlier — the empire builder in the energy sector.
Never stop and never accept fate as a failure.
Leaders tend to do things that are not tested by the time.
The walk into the uncharted territory all the time
It is okay to have lost the path sometimes or even abort the mission many times.
Failures and Setbacks are part and parcel of any undertaking.
The zest to keep going despite adversities and finding new horizons is what makes you a winner.
The top 1% do not stop until they win the game. They are resilient.
Managing Money:
You grow when you put your time and money into the right things.
New-found success often brings in the opportunity to spend rather than invest.
It is always a good idea to rejoice and enjoy the fruits of your hard work.
But it is equally important to balance the finance between work and pleasure.
Goal-setting in this area also works wonders
Set aside a percentage of the money you want to spend on enjoyment and work.
In my experience, it is always wise to assign 30% of the earnings to buy the thing you want, 40% to market and grow your business and the rest of the 40% in passive earning investment instruments like equity and start-ups.
Healthy Lifestyle:
You won\’t enjoy anything in life is you you are not healthy.
While managing time, assign at least an hour of your day to exercise.
Now the trick here is not to commit to something you are uncomfortable about.
Some people are good at running, some love swimming and there are individuals who commit to regimes like P90X and insanity or a Yoga class.
Choose what suits you and what you love to do.
Something you would like to do for an hour without any resistance.
Decision making:
Do not be afraid of making tough choices.
This is the point on which I have invested a lot of time to figure out.
You can be analytical and logical and look at an opportunity from many angles.
But at the end of the day it all bottles down to intuition.
If you have an intuition that you don’t want to sign up for a task do not do it.
And if you have an inclination towards it give it a hundred per cent.
Thus, decision-making is part of critical thinking.
Decide based on your intuitions and stand by your choices.
Adaptability:
However, no matter what choices you have made, nothing is permanent in this world.
You change, circumstances change and so your decision might change over time.
It is crucial to be flexible and adapt to the situation based on external and internal circumstances.
You might feel okay to go ahead with something you rejected earlier due to a new skill that you might have acquired.
Or the opportunity might have altered to your needs too.
Think and Rethink.
Delegation:
Wide open your ears to hear this, especially if you are a solopreneur.
You are not alone, and you don’t have to do everything on your own.
There are many monotonous, mechanical tasks to the bits and pieces of a business.
Delegate them to a person who would be happy and want to do it.
“What’s the bravest thing you ever said?” asked the boy. “Help,” said the horse. “Asking for help isn’t giving up,” said the horse, “it’s refusing to give up.”
— The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse
Persistence:
Be politely persistent.
It works and it works and it works
Can’t stress enough.
Every time you take a step towards your goal you are one step closer to your goal.
I always remind this myself of, when I don’t have the motivation to do anything.
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
— Martin Luther King Jr.
Mentorship:
Take and give mentorship.
Even if it is expensive, even if you can’t afford it.
The only reason is that it will push you a mile ahead of where you are right now.
An hour with a pioneer in your field might save you time on a degree.
Once you have enough experience in your business offer mentorship to people who might benefit from it.
It not only helps the person but also reinforces your own belief in your own system.
Humans tend to forget and need to be constantly reminded about what has worked for them in the past.
Every three months open doors for people willing to learn and teach them what you know.
More frequently than that, knock on the doors where you would like to get knowledge from.
Self Reflection:
Done is not done yet, until you reflect upon what you have done.
Let me explain.
At the end of the day, it is always a good idea to take note of what made you happy and what made you sad.
Well, life is not that black and white, but just sit down for a while to reflect on the day or task that you have completed.
Ask yourself how you felt about it.
If you feel good about it, acknowledge the feeling.
If you feel bad about something ask why?
Most of the time we feel bad about things for no reason, and if there is any substantial reason to feel bad, this is a good time to release it.
To forgive and forget.
Here is a bonus exercise for —
Set a timer of 5 minutes on the stopwatch (on your mobile) and write down the things that evoked negative emotions in you.
Merely materialising these emotions in the form of words can contribute towards a happy well-being.
Giving back:
Last but not least, Give back what you have, and it will return to you multifold.
Now this doesn’t always have to be money.
In fact, if you really want to help someone, don’t give him a fish, but teach him how to catch a fish.
Share your knowledge and it will grow overall.
